Boar Hunting Tips & Photos
Probably one of the most exciting animals to hunt are feral pigs. Chasing a big boar through dense scrub can really get the adrenaline running. However, it all isn't just fun and games. Feral pigs are dangerous and they do an immense amount of environmental damage. They kill both native and domestic animals; they wallow in and erode water holes and they are always digging and rooting around in the soil for food they can find..Pigs are also a big problem to livestock farmers. They carry diseases, and can pass them on to the livestock. Be careful that you check your pig thoroughly before eating any part of it. If you find any worms in it, or if the pig just doesn't look healthy, then don't eat it! It is better to be safe. The rewards of a successful hunt are a freeze full of pork, usually a good set of tusks to mount, and of course the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping rid our environment of these huge pests.

Domestic pigs were introduced to America by the first settlers. Pigs were used for food and were often allowed to roam free. In the early centuries, settlers often kept them unpenned and because the pig is an intelligent, adaptable animal, it quickly established itself in the wild where they came to be a serious pest. They eat and damage crops, damage fences, and will kill animals as large as a sheep. But the greatest threat feral pigs pose to agriculture is their potential to carry diseases likes foot and mouth disease and triginosis. The largest populations live in the Appalachians and in the South, wherever they can find food and cover and always where there is a good water supply. They breed throughout the year under favorable conditions usually producing two litters a year, with an average of six piglets in each litter. There can be high mortality among piglets depending on food supplies and weather conditions. Sows will aggressively protect their young and are quite dangerous if they believe there is any threat.. Piglets mature quickly and become sexually mature when they are about six months old. Feral pigs are omnivores, which means that they will eat both plant material and animals. Grass makes up the bulk of their diet where available. Feral pigs will also eat fruit, roots, beetles, young rabbits and other small animals as well as scavenge on carrion.

~~WE ARE NOT HOG DOG BREEDERS~~
Please read below....

This is for those with the overactive, inaccurate imaginations about HOG HUNTING with DOGS and to Those who enjoy passing judgment on folks they know absolutely nothing about.... Please educate yourself before you pass judgment. We use some of our dogs, mostly Magnum and Dixie as catch dogs, used in the WILD....We DO NOT BREED SPECIFICALLY FOR HOG DOGS. We certainly do not condone animal cruelty or any type of animal fighting, period! All you have to do is look around our site and you will see that we care immensely about our animals and would NEVER intentionally harm them. We show dogs, but enjoy working dogs as well... NOTHING wrong or illegal about that. The AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER was originally a working dog and should ALWAYS be that first. Ask a K9 Officer what he would do without his WORKING DOG or what would happen if German Shepherds or Malinois' were only bred for show? All dogs were created for a purpose and there is nothing wrong with using dogs in LEGAL working activities.

We are honest citizens, my husband and I both hold full time jobs, I am in the process of becoming a Sanctioned Conformation judge. We support our breed by attending Sanctioned shows, educating those who know nothing about our breed and fighting unnecessary BSL. I have over 12 years experience working as a Veterinarian Technician with 6 years in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) . I take care of and save hundreds of animals a week, what do you do? I have dedicated my entire life to these dogs. We have about 10 dogs that are almost 10 or over 10 years old. They are retired and have a home here until they die. Unlike other *Show Folks* who just get rid of them once their show and breeding careers are over. Animal Rights Groups say "SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR ANIMALS AND RESCUE DOGS." Um why? I don't have anything to do with the dogs in shelters. I enjoy a PUREBRED AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER, why should we, or people breeding responsibly every now and then get blamed for shelter dogs? We take back any dog we breed, our dogs are sold with contracts, they aren't in shelters, believe me.

For those that scream *ANIMAL CRUELTY* because people use dogs to HUNT WILD GAME, need a reality check. Do you know how chickens are kept in slaughter houses? Do you know how they slaughter pigs, cows, how they skin rabbits, etc...? Certainly going out in the woods and catching a Wild Hog with a dog and killing it is much less torture on the animal than what the animals specifically raised for the slaughter house go through, i.e. chickens in chicken houses that are injected with steroids since they hatch and will fall over from a heart attack if startled because their hearts are so big from the steroids they are fed day in and day out...  So some will say they are Vegetarians, Vegans or what have you... AND? Animals are used in experiments to investigate human diseases, test new drugs, agricultural chemicals, weapons and household products, such as deodorants, laundry detergents and toothpaste. Do you know what the animals in Animal Test Labs go through to test those cosmetics your wearing or the shampoo, toilet paper, skin lotion, Sanitary Napkins etc... Do any of you use Colgate, Palmolive or Dove or? Do a search and educated yourself on what they do to those guinea pigs... Did you know that just one company PROCTER AND GAMBEL uses about 50,000 animals a year to test products on.... or how many animals had to die to make that nice leather wallet, or shoes or the nice leather interior of your car.

What the FDA says:
Although the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act does not specifically mandate animal testing for cosmetic safety, FDA strongly urges cosmetic manufacturers to conduct whatever tests are appropriate to establish that their cosmetics are safe. In the United States, manufacturers bear a responsibility to ensure their Products are safe for consumer use. In fact, cosmetic products that have not been adequately tested for safety must have warning statement on the front label which reads,

"WARNING--The safety of this product has not been determined."

FDA continues to work with other governments and private organizations to develop validated alternatives to animal testing in assessing cosmetic safety and considerable progress has been made in some areas. Nevertheless, until a method has been proven to be reliable and accepted by the scientific community, FDA believes that the use of animals remains necessary to ensure the safety of cosmetic ingredients and products.

Do you or any of your loved ones or friends take medications? Do you know how many animals suffer daily testing Medications to help us Humans? Bet you or your child was sick and the only thing to save you or your child is an Animal Tested Medicine would you say no? How about cancer treatments or Diabetes which all need animal tested medications... Now how about Mary Beth Sweetland, vice president of PETA? She is a type A diabetic and therefore has to take insulin (a drug tested on animals) everyday to survive. Yes, the same PETA that supports burning down research labs. Doesn't she sound like a hypocrite? She doesn't think so.. she's been quoted.. "I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic. Twice a day I take synthetically manufactured insulin that contains some animal products -- and I have no qualms about it ... I'm not going to take the chance of killing myself by not taking insulin. I don't see myself as a hypocrite. I need my life to fight for the rights of animals."  Seems like animal rights are only more important than human life when it doesn't involve her....
Does Hypocrisy ring a bell?

Jerry Greenwalt is the General Manager of the Department of Animal Service of the city of Los Angeles. PETA has driven this man up the wall with protests, picketing, and vandalism. In fact, his wife has suffered a heart attack due to the stress brought on by PETA supporters. These people go into his neighborhood and yell over loud speakers about how evil he is. Why you ask? Because he has people put animals to sleep. So? The animals would otherwise be on the streets of L.A. starving to death or biting and attacking people. What PETA doesn't tell you is that THEY too put animals to sleep. Of the 2,103 animals that PETA brought into their headquarters, they killed 1,325. Yes, PETA, an animal rights organization, KILLS animals. Ingrid Newkirk, the founder and president of PETA has been quoted, "Sometimes the only kind option for some animals is to put them to sleep forever." I guess Jerry doesn't comprehend this and is killing the animals for fun? NOT.. Jerry Greenwalt has saved over 63,000 animals the same year in L.A. and is trying to increase adoptions and awareness on spaying and neutering so they don't have to put animals to sleep in the future.

Here's someone that PETA has no problem with.... Rodney Coronado. He fire-bombed a Michigan State University lab and admitted to 6 other arsons. He is probably the most celebrated activist among the animal rights extremists. Ingrid Newkirk has gone on record claiming him to be a "fine young man." In PETA's tax return a donation of $45,200 was made to the Rondey Coronada Support Fund and a $25,000 "loan" was made to Rondey's father the same year. Think PETA might have some sort of connection between the FIRE-BOMBING of research labs?

PETA's final goal is the total liberation of animals everywhere. That means that there are no pets, no seeing eye dogs, no meat, no fur, and even no honey (yes, bees apparently are prosecuted). But that also means to animal research. Without animal research, medical progress would be slowed down by at least 85%. PETA says that if they ever had to test on a rat, AIDS would never be cured? If that isn't ridiculous, I don't know what is.. They aren't willing to cure aids, but their Vice President can take Insulin? Human life is evidently less valuable to them than animal rights. That is why it is so easy for them to start such campaigns as "Holocaust on Your Plate." On their website they intercut livestock photos with pictures from concentration camps. Yes, PETA is very "Ethical

Maybe all of you screaming ANIMAL CRUELTY at those of us who simply hunt for food should sit back and think a little and realize that you yourself commit some type of Animal Cruelty every day of your life. See, the point is not to put down Peta or any "particular" Animal Rights group, but to open the eyes of those that are involved with them that don't realize these things about them... their heart is in the right place, but they go about stuff the wrong way and are very much hypocrites in many aspects...

Let's say we can't hunt deer or hogs any longer. At least we will still have them to look at, right? Consider this: There are over 10 million deer in Texas alone. Hunters in Texas harvest around 500,000 deer each year. If the animal rights folks got their way and deer hunting were discontinued, a large majority of the deer in that state would die a slow, miserable death. They would starve. Man has become a viable part of the checks and balance system of the deer's ecosystem. By not harvesting the half million deer that they currently harvest annually, they would run out of food. Sound like hype? It's not.... do your research. In early 1900, around Kaibab Plateau in Arizona, a mule deer herd grew to 4000 head. Hunting these deer became illegal. In 24 years the herd grew to 100,000. They ate everything in sight. During the winters of 1924 and 1925, over 50,000 of the mule deer died, due to starvation. It taught wildlife conservationist an important lesson. Man is an instrumental part of the ecosystem of our wildlife. Taking him out of the conservation picture would have devastating effects to all of our wildlife and fish.

Our dogs are healthy, well taken care of and spoiled and we are against the use of animals for illegal purposes and would never intentionally harm an animal or be cruel to an animal. A few of our dogs are used as *Catch Dogs*, which is STILL LEGAL, and they are used in the woods to hunt WILD FERAL NUISANCE BOARS. This is NOT hog dog fighting, and really, there is no such thing as a hog dog fight, that's just the media and Animal Rights folks over sensationalizing what happened.... It's catch work... The dogs use vests for protection from the hogs tusks and once the catch dog is released on the hog, we get a handle on the dog and the hog is killed. We do not release hogs in enclosed pens or arenas to catch them just for fun.  If animals weren't hunted they would overpopulate and cause major destruction as they do already. It's part of the CYCLE OF LIFE and there's a reason why we're at the top of the food chain... We send all our kills to be packaged to eat... We eat our meat caught by us, natural, from the wild, no steroids, no preservatives... WE HUNT FOR FOOD!!!

I'll leave you all with this... Some people's stand is based on personal decisions to not hunt, to not eat meat and then finding a justification for imposing those beliefs on others. Sorry, but you don't get to tell us how to live, just like I don't get to tell you how to live. Some may be completely and utterly convinced of the rightness of their argument but that doesn't, in and of itself, make it right. Because, if that were the case, then abortion would be illegal and we'd all be whatever religion our current president is. And guess what? That ain't my America and anytime someone TELLS me how to live is the easiest way to get me to do the opposite.
Impose not your issues upon me.
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.~~~

too old to have fun. She is currently 10 years old as of June 2004
and still catching hogs in the wild...
Dixie is also a CONFORMATION CHAMPION...
she works and looks good :)

This is Magnum below, his first time ever catching a hog....
we ROASTED that hog afterwards... good boy Magnum
Magnum was less than 18 months in these pictures, a heavy bred Jeep dog. He is now a full grown adult and has brought his share of WILD Boars home for us from the deep woods. He has thrown 2 very nice dogs for us off Swivel who share his same "enthusiam" and "natural ability" in the woods... bringing home the bacon at 8 months old.
